How To Upgrade Brushes Drumset to v3 and Default Content to v2.1

published on May 8, 2020

What’s New In Brushes Drumset v3?

While the new version of the brushes drumset has the same sound character to the previous version, most samples were replaced with new samples. I did this to achieve a greater dynamic range and to increase the signal to noise ratio. The results are “cleaner” sounding samples that produce an overall cleaner output when beats are played at a lower dynamic level with the master output turned up. As well as most of the components, the snare drum was re-sampled to provide finer details for lower volume playing.

New instruments have been added:

  • Snare short sweep (E1, note id# 40)
  • Snare long sweep (F1, note id# 41)
  • Snare long sweep off-switch (B0, note id# 35)
  • Hi-hat foot splash (B1, note id# 47)

Snare long sweeps act like an open hi-hat note. They sound in their entirety or until they are cut off by the switch note on B0.

Updated default brushes beats to v2.1

For the default brushes beats to playback and sound good, they also had to be modified. Generally, I lowered all velocities to about half to what they were. The grooves now sound mellower and gentler, which is more appropriate for the brush style of playing. You will need to replace your existing default brush beats folder with this new version.

DISCLAIMER: When glancing over the “how-to” instructions, they may seem scary and overwhelming at first. Don’t worry; you’ll get through them. Due to current BeatBuddy Manager bugs, the process is more involved than it should be, but I made a significant effort to explain every step of the way in detail to make it easier for you to follow. I even spent an additional 5 days making the video to make it easier for you. The instructions are meant to help even a total beginner.

How to update from previous versions

Please choose the option that is suitable for your needs. Instructions with VIDEO for each scenario are provided in a step-by-step fashion. YOU CAN DO IT!

OPTION 1: If you have not made any changes to the default content (any version)

EASIEST: If you do not want to use the BB Manager and simply want to load the updated content onto your SD Card, download the Default Content 2.1 SD Card Backup.

Option 1a

1. Erase everything on your SD Card.

2. Then, open the ZIP archive you just downloaded by double-clicking it. Inside you will find a folder that contains everything. Drag that folder onto your desktop.

3. Open the newly extracted folder on your desktop, and inside you will find 5 folders and 3 files. Select all of those files and folders and drag them onto your blank SD Card. Once the copying is finished, insert the SD Card into your BeatBuddy and enjoy it!

MORE INVOLVED: If you want to use the BB Manager to add more content to the default content, download the BB Workspace 2.1 backup folder.

Option 1b

1. Open the ZIP archive you just downloaded, and you will see 2 folders inside: default_lib and user_lib.

2. Navigate to your existing BBWorkspace, as such:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\BBWorkspace

On Mac, you will need to navigate to the BBWorkspace folder inside Documents directory. If you do not have the BBWorkspace folder in Documents, create one now manually.

3. Inside the BBWorkspace folder, you will also find the default_lib and user_lib folders. Select them both and DELETE them.

4. Now drag those 2 folders from the downloaded ZIP archive (you have open) straight into the BBWorkspace in your documents.

5. Start the BB Manager. You will need to load the Default Content 2.1 project by going to File-> Open Project. Navigate to its location inside your default_lib/projects folder of your BBWorkspace.

6. You can verify which project you have opened by looking at the project name underneath the virtual BeatBuddy pedal. To verify that you have the latest Brushes Drumset loaded, open up the Brushes folder and select the last song by the name of “You have Brushes Drumset v3 if you can hear the sound”. Just play the song to verify the sound is coming out.

! If no sound is coming out, go the Drumset tab. If you are seeing a duplicate brushes drumset in italic, it means that your old brushes drumset is still present. Select it, then delete by going to top menu: Drumsets-> Delete Drumset. Repeat the action if unsuccessful the first time. Go to Songs tab, save the project and restart the BeatBuddy Manager.
Make sure that the new Brushes Drumset is added to the project by check-marking it, then save the project and play the test song again. You should be hearing the sound.

7. To transfer the project to your BeatBuddy, make sure your SD Card is inserted into your computer, then go to File->Export->Project To SD Card. Select your SD Card, click OK and let it do the transfer. When prompted to associate the SD Card for future synchronizations, click OK.

OPTION 2: If you have made changes to the default content v2.0 or have multiple BeatBuddy projects

You will need to update your existing projects with the new Brushes Drumset, and the new default Brushes beats v2.1.

1. Download the Brushes Drumset v3.0, which also contains the updated Brushes Beats.

2. Navigate to your default_lib folder inside your BBWorkspace. as such:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\BBWorkspace/default_lib

On Mac, you will need to navigate to the BBWorkspace folder inside Documents directory.

3. Inside the drum_sets folder of your default_lib, locate the Brushes Drumset. DELETE it.

4. Open the ZIP archive of the Brushes Drumset v3.0, which you downloaded. Inside it, you will see:

    • Brushes Drumset v3.0.drm
    • Default_Brushes_Beats_v2.1.pbf
    • HOW TO INSTALL-READ ME.pdf

5. Navigate to your user_lib of the BBWorkspace:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\BBWorkspace/user_lib

6. Open the drum_sets folder within the user_lib. If you previously installed additional drumsets, you will find them there. Otherwise, it will be empty.

7. From the opened ZIP archive, drag the Brushes Drumset v3.0.drm file into this drum_sets folder. (The reason we are copying the new version of the default Brushes drumset into the user_dir and not the default_dir is to get around a BB Manager bug.)

8. Drag the Brushes_Beats_v2.1.pbf file onto your desktop, as well as the HOW TO INSTALL-READ ME.pdf.

9. Start the BB Manager. You will need to update all BeatBuddy projects individually for the newly-imported drumset and beats to take effect.

10. Open your (first) project. Under the Drum Sets tab, check-mark the Brushes Drumset. Go back to Songs tab. Save your project (ctrl+S).

11. Locate the (old) Brushes folder in the list, then delete it by going to top menu: Songs->Delete Folder.

12. Import the updated Brushes songs folder by going to: File->Import->Folder and navigate to the Default_Brushes_Beats_v2.1.pbf you previously saved on your desktop. Save the project.

13. Verify the new Brushes Drumset is playing. Open the Brushes folder and select the last song by the name of “You have Brushes Drumset v3 if you can hear sound”. If you see that song, it means you have successfully imported the updated default Brushes Beats. Now just play the song to verify the sound is coming out.

14. If you have multiple projects, then you will need to repeat the procedure for each one. Simply open the next one, delete old default Brushes beats folder, import new brushes beats, make sure to check-mark the Brushes drumset, save the project, and restart the BB Manager as necessary.

15. To transfer the project to your BeatBuddy, make sure your SD Card is inserted into your computer, then go to File->Export->Project To SD Card. Select your SD Card, click OK and let it do the transfer. When prompted to associate the SD Card for future synchronizations, click OK.

OPTION 3: If you own Complete Collection 2019 or 2020

EASIEST: If you do not want to use the BB Manager and simply want to load the updated version of the Complete Collection onto your SD Card, download the latest version from your account at the platform where you purchased it from. It will either be at the BeatBuddy Premium Library website or SingularSound.com website.

Option 3a

1. Erase everything on your SD Card.

2. Then, open the ZIP archive of the latest edition of Complete Collection you just downloaded by double-clicking it. Inside, you will find a single folder that contains everything. Drag that folder onto your desktop.

3. Open the newly extracted folder on your desktop, and inside you will find 5 folder and 3 files.

4. Select all of those files and folders and drag them onto your blank SD Card. Once the copying is finished, insert the SD Card into your BeatBuddy and enjoy it!

MORE INVOLVED: If you want to update just the Brushes Drumset and default Brushes Beats, you will need to use the BB Manager software. Download the latest version of the Brushes Drumset along with updated default Brushes beats and follow the instructions for OPTION 2 above, or watch the video below.

Option 3b

Remember that, as an owner of Complete Collection 2020, you also have access to the extensive collection of brush beats included in Songwriter Brushes. You will need to add that collection in addition to the default drumset and default brushes beats. You can obtain the Songwriter Brushes from your account’s “Individual Albums” ZIP archive.

OPTION 4: If you are still using Default Content v1 and have made changes to it or have several projects based on V1

In August 2019, we released Default Content v2.0, which contains significant changes and improvements across the board. If you have not updated your content to v2.0, now is a great chance to update it to 2.1, which encompasses the previous changes. For detailed information on all changes that took effect in v2.0, please see this blog post.

1) BACKUP. Save all of your custom content.

1. To save your custom drumsets, navigate to your drum_sets folder within user_lib of BBWorkspace, as such:

2. Select any custom drumsets you may have and copy them to a location of your choice outside the BBWorkspace folder.

3. Start the BB Manager and export all of your custom song folders. To do that, select the folder you want to export and go to: File->Export->Folder. Save it to a location of your choice outside the BBWorkspace folder. Repeat the process for each folder.

! If you have purchased and added releases from the Premium Library, you can download and import them again once the update of the default content is completed.

3. Import each custom .pbf folder you previously backup by going to File->Import->Folder. After importing each one, save the project (ctrl+S).

4. When you are done importing your custom songs, re-import the premium content you purchased from the Premium Library.

5. Make sure to add all of your drumsets to your project by going to the Drum Sets tab and check-marking them all. Go back to the Songs tab and save your project.

6. Verify that everything is working and playing fine.

! If no sound is coming out, save the project and close the BB Manager. Then, open the BB Manager again and test the songs. You should hear everything properly.
